Philippians 2:1-4

If then there is any encouragement in Christ, if any consolation of love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, fulfill my joy by thinking the same way, having the same love, sharing the same feelings, focusing on one goal. Do nothing out of rivalry or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves. Everyone should look out not only for his own interests but also for the interests of others. -Philippians 2:1-4

With the arrival of a new year, many are setting goals that they hope to reach over the course of the next 365 days. In our “me-centered” culture, we are apt to make goals that focus on ourselves. We will hear of a myriad of goals such as losing weight, going on a dream vacation, making more money, etc.. While these goals are not wrong to achieve, I wonder what difference could be made if we, as Believers, set out to humbly approach this new year. What if we laid down our sense of self? What if we followed the example of Jesus, and set our goal to serve, love, and be grace-bearers? Imagine the Gospel opportunities we might encounter over the next 365 days when we shift our focus away from ourselves, to serve humbly in the name of Jesus! ~ Stephania Whitfield
