Hebrews 2:4 – Miracles

“while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.” ~ Hebrews 2:4

From dictionary.com:

  1. an effect or extraordinary event in the physical world that surpasses all known human or natural powers and is ascribed to a supernatural cause.
  2. such an effect or event manifesting or considered as a work of God.
  3. a wonder; marvel.

Sometimes I think we use the word loosely, not giving a second thought of the magnificence of miracles from God – great or small. Recently, during the Christmas holidays, someone close to me made the statement “It’s a Christmas miracle!” about a positive incident that occurred in their life. Hearing that statement immediately caused me to ponder the true Christmas miracle is the birth of Jesus, our Lord and Savior.

With further pondering, I realized that I am guilty of waiting for “those miracles” that overwhelm us with great joy and astonishment – the healing of a loved one, relationships restored, the job that comes through just in the nick of time. Yet, what about that breathtaking sunrise and sunset, that beautiful rainbow after a storm, a child’s laughter, a kind word when you’re feeling down, or a smile! I could go on and on because they all surpass human or natural powers and are certainly a work of God, as defined at dictionary.com.

Sometimes we need to be reminded that we encounter God’s miracles every single day. I am choosing to be more aware joyous, astonished, and ever so thankful for the miracles that God performs all around me. What are the miracles in your life today?
