Mark 10:42‭-‬45 ESV – Be A Slave?

And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles Lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

~ Mark 10:42‭-‬45 ESV

Jesus calls us to be servants, or to be a “slave of all”. I think this is meaning to serve others without being owed compensation. We should serve others in every way that we can and not expect anything in return. If our hearts are pure in our efforts of service, our service to others can be hindered if we’re expecting a return. We shouldn’t give gifts expecting something in return. We shouldn’t help others with things hoping for some sort of compensation. If we do help someone do something, just for helping (meaning, no agreed upon compensation as in for a job), and we expect compensation of some sort and do not receive it, we could harden our hearts at the next request. As in, “I’m not  going to go help them anymore building their shed because they didn’t even OFFER me some money!”

Even in a working relationship with subordinates, a person can lead with love and be there to serve the interests of those that work for them. Giving the employees tools, training, and compensation that they need is a way to best serve them. This will show them that you indeed serve them, while they serve you, and it’s all in the best interest of the company.

Do you have a servants heart? Do you expect a return on your treatment or giving to others?
