When Life is Hard – Psalm 34
Life is hard.Â
Every day holds joys and disappointments, trials and blessings, easy things and hard things.
Some days will just get you feeling down. And other days will feel impossible in the face of tragedy or disaster. Sometimes the difficulties in life can make us feel cut off, isolated, or abandoned. The hard thing we face can threaten to consume us whole, like a fire.
One thing we know, in good days and in bad, is that if we have the Hope that is Jesus Christ, then we are never alone. Whether God walks us around the fire or through it, God walks with us. The fire may rage around us, but it will not consume us.
I think of King David, and how often he bared his soul to God through the Psalms, crying out in distress and anguish. And then I remember his words in Psalm 34:
When the righteous cry for help, the LORD hears
and delivers them out of all their troubles.
The LORD is near to the brokenhearted
and saves the crushed in spirit.
Many are the afflictions of the righteous,
but the LORD delivers him out of them all. (Psalm 34:17-19 ESV)
The Bible tells us that we will experience troubles and afflictions but it also tells us that God will deliver us, and that God will draw near to the brokenhearted and the crushed. We can find comfort in knowing that we don’t have to face these things on our own.
Life is indeed hard.Â
But we are not alone.Â
