I Can Do All Things I Want to Do
I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.
Philippians 4:13 ESV
I’m not sure that Friday night lights have ever gone by in Texas without that scripture being said somewhere. We, as Christ Followers, love this scripture. It’s so popular that in this very journal at least one other devotional writer has included it as their scripture reference. But we use it as if it’s a magic saying. Whenever we want to do something, we don’t bother asking if it’s something God wants from us. A quick “I can do all things” reassurance, and we’re on our way to victory in Jesus’ name.
This week I saw a post on social media saying (abridged), “I pray that God will replace all of your troubles with blessings.” That’s such a lovely thought, but is that at all what God wants? When we say, “I can do all things”, what do we really mean? I can do all of the things I would like to do? Or all of the trials in which He already has me? In truth one of the greatest failings we have is trying to evade the very tests which we are going through to prepare us for the kind of true disciples He needs us to be. If we’re overcoming the same obstacles we’ve always overcome, then growth is impossible, and if we haven’t exhausted our own strength in doing that, then His strength will not yet be evident.
This week my prayer for you isn’t that you will do the things that you want, but that you will remember that Christ has equipped you for the most difficult trails you are already in and the ones that are to come.
