What do I pray?

Have you ever been in this place? The place where your thoughts are reeling, or your heart is breaking, or tears are falling. You know you need to pray, to ask God for help, but you just aren’t sure what to say, or how to say it. In those moments it’s hard to form a complete thought, much less an eloquently organized prayer to God.

And so enters the Holy Spirit.

Romans 8:26 tells us, “And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. We don’t know what God wants us to pray for, but the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words.”

What a huge comfort! Just in this one verse, look at all the Holy Spirit can do for us!

  1. Help us in our weakness
  2. Pray FOR us
  3. The prayers are groanings that cannot be expressed in words

Rest in this, my fellow Christians. The Holy Spirit is working in us. The Holy Spirit intercedes on our behalf. And when we just don’t know what to say, the Holy Spirit will pray for us.

I’ve definitely had those moments when I was anguished and didn’t know what to pray. I simply cry out, “Holy Spirit help me! Find the words and pray for me.” And you know what? Works every time…
